SHARAN B. MERRIAM is professor of adult education at the University of Georgia. RALPH G. BROCKETT is professor of adult education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He is the co-editor-in-chief of New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, a journal published by Jossey-Bass. He is the editor or coeditor of numerous books including Overcoming Resistance to Self-Direction (1994), Self-Direction in Adult Learning (1991), Professional Development for Educators of Adults (1991), and Ethical Issues in Adult Education (1988 ).
