MCLAUGHLIN is professor of education and public policy and director of the Center for Research on the Context of Secondary School Teaching at Stanford University. JOAN E. TALBERT is senior research scholar and associate director of the Center for Research on the Context of Secondary School Teaching at Stanford University.
